I would not recommend this to you if heavy rock means "cheel-kauwa" to you. I was once playing heavy rock on my desk, and my colleague comes up and asks - "Yeh kya cheel-kauwe sun raha hai". Yep, its really a good description of heavy rock, if you dont like it. And I dont resent that. But to those who do listen to this stuff, its everything. Sample paragraph from Norther-Everything.

Random rant for heavy metal

Now, I am quite much into heavy metal, and do listen to black metal too sometimes. Now there are many people who dont like rock too much, especially the heavy variety. Initially, I too did not, but I got into it slowly. It grows on you.

Now below two paragraphs of a song called "Watching over me" by Iced Earth. I would not recommend anyone listening to it, its quite heavy. Now, black metal is not all screaming and shouting. I must say, I have found more depth in rock lyrics than ghazals and qawalis that music lovers swear by. (Most of the ghazal, sufi etc lovers dont actually get it, they just follow the herd). There are many bands who do make some wonderful lyrics, like Pink Floyd and Metallica, these being the top-of-the-head examples.

Football fever - 3 Some good matches

So, Germany defeats Poland in a nailbiting 1-0 finish, thanks to a last minute injury time goal. Dogged defense by both teams, failure to convert chances into goals held both teams to nil all throughout the match. Just shows that soccer can be a very unpredictable game. Anything can happen at the last minute. A similar example I recall is the champions league final in 2005, AC Milan vs Liverpool. AC Milan was 3-0 up at half time, but Liverpool equalized in the second half, scoring 3 goals in a span of 10 minutes or so, and winning the game in a penalty shootout.

Spain vs Tunisia was another interesting match. Tunisia scored in the 8th minute and took the lead. Spain scored in the 71st and 76th minutes, to take back the lead and rubbed it in with a 3-1 defeat, the last goal coming in the last minute in a penalty kick. For seventy minutes it seemed that the Spanish have come back to their old ways - chokers, and non-performance in crunch matches. But two goals in 5 minutes turned around the match, and Tunisian defense broke down. I have this impression that African teams play real rough to make up for lack of talent. Tunisia reinforced that. They played really rough, sliding tackles from behind, pulling down the Spanish players, it was all there. The only exception is Ivory Coast, who play really well, and they dont play as rough as the other African teams. Too bad they are out, having lost to Holland and Argentina.

Holland vs Ivory Coast - Very interesting. Both teams play fast and so it was fun to watch. And both teams are good. Ivory Coast is supposed to be the best team from Africa this time. Holland was guilty of some dirty tricks, but then referee punished what he saw. Holland play-acted too much (of course every team does, but then they were acting too much). Sad to see a good skillful team like Ivory Coast crash out. Of course, they would have crashed out later when they faced the likes of Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, England, Italy, Spain etc. But too sad that they crashed out too early. Not for nothing is this group called the Group of Death. Any fine day, it could have been Holland or Argentina that crashed out.

Korea vs France - Another boring draw. One thing I noticed is that its not as though France is not playing well. Henry is the only guy up front who is supposed to put the ball in the goal, and he isnt getting enough support. Zidane is not what he was 8 years ago. I was having good hopes from France, with 6 players from the team winning the 1998 world cup still playing. But then, something just aint right. Their speed has reduced. Henry isnt in good form.

Ghana vs Czech Republic - Upset. Wow.. great match. Ghana did overpower them. I had high hopes from Czech Republic and everyone had so. But then, this was their second match. In their first, they creamed US 3-0 without Milan Baros, who is injured and not playing yet. And I am disappointed with their defeat against Ghana.

An old friend whom I contacted on phone, said France were playing good actually, but unable to convert, and that Czech republic might land in last four. My roomie was not pleased with France's performance. I told him that they are infact playing well. Now he does not like being countered so, many a times, I let things pass.

My argumentative roomie really got worked up and angry because I said Czech republic can make it. And he doesnt favour them. And then he goes on to say, "hey are you the master on everything, etc etc." And Czechs losing the match to Ghana actually buttressed his points. He pointed out the defeat quite a number of times to prove me wrong. Yeah, all this is speculation. Upsets do happen. As if I am placing bets on any team, against him.. Hehh.

Anyway, just to silence him and stop his "expert" commentary when he does not even know the basic rules of the game, I hope Czechs make it through this time.

Narmada issue - the fifth post i think

I had earlier had some nasty comments when I went hammer and tongs at the height of dumbness (aamir khan).

Now, in this article, ignore the secular-communal blabberings, but note the part on Narmada.

Modi came to Delhi for secret talks with Soz where Soz virtually begged him to postpone the decision. "I will issue a public statement saying you are India's greatest statesman," Soz told Modi, possibly expecting that an endorsement from a Kashmiri Muslim would help Modi wash away some of the Godhra black."

Now, its clear that Gujarat has done the rehab part, its MP which is pending. So, why do aamir and medha patkar have to spew venom on Gujarat.

Soccer Fever - 2

FIFA World Cup Soccer Germany 2006.

The first matches of all the teams are over, across the eight groups. So my thoughts about the some of the teams, from what I have seen so far. And about whom I know (maybe limited)

Germany - Good so far. They seem to be well organized and have good coordination. Apart from Klose and Ballack, Schneider in the midfield is doing well. Great goals in the opening game, they were a joy to watch.

England - Beckham. More? Ok, that one wonderful goal scored against Paraguay. It was a free kick from medium range, which touched the Paraguay captain before heading into the nets. England team is fast, pretty fast. The midfield is strong with Beckham(seems to be in good form), Gerrard and Lampard. Defense is perhaps the best in this world cup. Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Campbell, Neville, Cole are amazing defenders and its not easy to get past the English defense. They have strong chances of winning.

Sweden - With Larsson, Lungberg and Ibramovic at forwards and midfield, they are quite strong, but they failed to score against Trinidad and Tobago. They are good contenders but dont seem to be the ones who can win the final.

Paraguay - A good team. Good attacking play. But can they make it?

Argentina - Wow. I think they played better than Brazil. I think they are being underrated and underestimated. The spotlight may be on Brazil, but these guys are playing really well. Riquelme is amazing on the midfield. They have a good midfield (sorin (a defender actually but like cafu, plays on the flanks), riquelme, aimar) and good strike (crespo, messi, saviola). They are strong contenders.

Holland - Very competitive. Total football. Joy to watch on the field. They may not be as strong as they were during France 1998 (amazing football from them during this world cup, they were my favs that time). Attack is good (Nistelrooy, Robben). Good goalkeeper (Van der Saar, who is the captain too, IIRC). No big names like the last time. No Bergkemp, no Kluivert (wondering why he has been left out), no Edgar Davids. They may go far.

Ivory Coast - A better team than what I had expected. Played very well against Argentina. And surprisingly, generally compared to the teams from Africa, these guys arent playing so rough. Drogba, the captain, is a lead striker for Chelsea in English Premier League. They may turn out to be the dark horse.

Portugal - Another dark horse. But they may get nervous. Or they may be chokers like Spain. I think they are playing in the world cup after a long time. They reached the finals of Euro 2004. Having a very good run since then. Figo and C Ronaldo are good.

Italy - Cannot say much about them, but they may spring a few surprises. Good team, but lack someone like Baggio or Maldini. Totti, Del Piero and Nesta are the stars this time.

Australia - Dark horses. Play rough but they have some good players like Viduka and Kewell.

Brazil - Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos, Cafu, Lucio in the defense. Dida the goalkeeper. Ronaldinho, Kaka, Juninho in the midfield. (plus carlos and cafu who play all over the field). Adriano, Robinho and Ronaldo(somewhat disappointing) as strikers. Need I elaborate?

Croatia - Good fast attacking football. Well knit team.

France - A major disappointment. I found their game slow. I had higher hopes, since they are playing 6 of their players who won the world cup in 1998. They seemed to be disorganized. Drew 0-0 with Switzerland. Zidane is not what he was in 1998. Henry seems out of form.

Spain - Chokers historically. Can they make it this time? Chances dont seem to be high. But their 4-0 victory over Ukraine suggests otherwise. They start well, but choke later. Plus no one star to push them through.

Its never necessary that the team with stars wins. Too many stars in the team, ego hassles and personal glory come in. Too less stars means less inspiration, and less talent/skill. If a team has around 2-3 stars and bignames, the other players are inspired.

Soccer fever - 1 Brazil shows its colours

I am following the soccer world cup quite closely, as much permitted by my office hours. Till now, a few good matches, a few great goals and a few disappointments.

I watched the Brazil vs Croatia match yesterday. Brazil looks good on paper, and they proved it on field too, defeating Croatia 1-0. But I must say Brazil was lucky that Croatians could not blow apart the Brazil defense, which was not that great. Croatia missed a few great chances, particularly the three nearing the end of the match. The tall Croatians seemed to be much faster than the Brazilians, and they used the field placements quite well. Overall, Brazil were not as impressive as I hoped them to be. The team that won the 2002 world cup seemed to be much better.

The biggest disappointment seemed to be Ronaldo. I did read news about him being overweight. Boy he is overweight. He was quite slow on the field. He was replaced by Robinho after 70 minutes, and he seemed to be much better and faster, though a bit inexperienced. Ronaldo got just one shot on the goal, which was easily stopped by the goalkeeper.

Ronaldinho was as usual, very good. Fast and skillful on the field. He did not score, he is a midfielder and so his primary job is to take the ball up front. He did not seem to be playing the goalscorer role today. But then, with two or three opposing players targetting him constantly, he could not do much. I did not count, but maybe he was felled about 10 times by the opponents. This left slightly underrated Kaka (underrated atleast in the Brazil team, compared to the two Rs) with good chances to score and he did deliver. He made out space for himself while being followed by a Croatian player, quickly set up the ball and sent a long range kick curling rightwards into the net. A second similar shot went outside the net in the second half.

The surprise packages were Cafu and Carlos. Two ageing players who handle the flanks. Running from the back to the midfield and to the front. Cafu (also the captain) aged 36 is playing his third (or is it fourth, please correct me if wrong) World Cup. And he is still good, doing his job well. And Carlos was pretty good too. And young Ronaldo disappointed. Well, it may be too early to say this, Ronaldo may do well in the matches coming up. And not easy opponents these, Australia and Japan. I suppose, this might well be the other group of death. Australia is a dark horse, and Japan is Asias number one team.

Croatia has been a good team mostly, with many of the players playing in the German League. The captain Niko Kovac plays for the Berlin team.

Reservation argument continues - 8

The Supreme Court on Monday permitted institutions belonging to the Muslim community in Maharashtra to hold separate Common Entrance Test for admission to professional courses for academic year 2006-07.

Going by this, I dont have much hopes on the reservation front now. But I wonder how the test should be different for them. Are they going to ask them to quote from the Quran. The more Quran and anti-Hindu (or anti-non-Muslim for that matter) comments you pepper your answer sheet with, the more you get marks.

Reservation argument continues - 7

It seems like the people amongst the backwards, who cannot perform, are jealous of the ones amongst them who do.

Seems very much like "Hey why are you doing so well. Because of you guys, we are not able to get what we want. We are losing our identity, the identity that we are underperformers, we need crutches and by virtue of our caste, we need affirmative action, reservations, quotas, a "little" push. We will lose all that if you do well and change our image of being underperformers."

It seems like they actually dont want to change. Many among the backwards want to remain as they are, since they lose the benefits if more amongst them actually come forward. Crazy world!!

Dual nature of the shadows

People like these on the blogosphere exist. If you say that you listen to Iron Maiden, Sepultura or Black Sabbath, you will be accused of not believing in God. If you say that you listen to bhajans or carols, you will be accused of being a fundamentalist / bigot / racist / casteist / anyOtherDamnThing. So do I believe in Him/Her or do I not? Or both, like in quantum physics.

If you say that you hate Shahrukh or Aamir Khan, you automatically turn communal and fundamentalist. The Godwins laws are also invoked, both desi (Here on the desi one) and videsi. It doesnt matter than that you like Irfan Pathan bowling. Does that make me secular enough. Or both.

There seems to be no escape. So much to say, so much to speak out on, but thats why I avoid jumping too much into hot topics of blogosphere. Plus cant spend too much time arguing with people who have all the time in the world for all these things.

Reservation arguments - 6

Ok, one more post on reservations. I am not posting anything offensive; I am just trying to be as clear and factual as possible.

I dont even know how to recognize castes. I am not against any caste. I dont know which surnames indicate which caste, unless somebody says that. I must add that I dont even know about much about caste, forget about discriminating against them. Like I did not know what caste my colleague is. The one I mentioned in a previous post, the one who says reservations should exist because forwards oppressed backwards a thousand years ago, so we should get a chance to do the same (Doesnt matter whether my ancestors did anything to any backward caste).

It was only after he told me that he is from the backwards that I came to know that he is. Does not change my opinion or relation with him anyway? He is still the same as earlier. Just another colleague. The only thing that has changed is that I am kind of afraid of him now. If I ever dont agree with him, or I am unable to resolve his problem, or I joke on him as just another colleague, he would accuse me of being casteist (Sighhsss.. Desi Godwins Laws).

So I have reduced talking with him now (I do talk with him, but just cut 2 cut), never know that a slightest joke can make him accuse me of a whole bunch of things. Good that he hasnt accused me of non-communication because I am a casteist. LOLzzz....

One common argument put forth is that forwards oppressed backwards for a long period of time. And much previously than the British, who oppressed and enslaved the whole of India, regardless of caste/religion/anyOtherBarrier. I suppose the backwards should now stop working for MNCs then, because they oppressed them just 50 years ago. Or before them, the Muslims oppressed non-Muslims regardless of their caste. Should then, backwards stop working with Muslims. And the difference here is - just *some* of the forwards oppressed backwards, not all, but *most* British and Muslims oppressed India.

Now, dont take it in a wrong way, it is just an example. If you give a beggar 50 paise, he will ask for a rupee. If you give him Rs 5, he will ask for Rs 10 and if you tell him to get lost, he will try to earn money himself.

So , if you grant ridiculous amounts of reservations to the backwards, they lose the incentive to perform, to work hard, to think. If that is lost, they are just as good as another brick in the wall. A wall that can crumble anytime. I think this is going to harm the good guys amongst the backward castes, instead of helping them.

Now this is what I call a batsman. Inspires total fear into the opponents. I cannot imagine Brian Lara being so afraid of a batsman that he stops play, asks the batsman to leave, snatches the ball from the umpire. More than anything else, its that fear that he had put into Lara and his team's hearts. Amazing. The realization that this guy on the crease can blast them apart if he stays any further, and so get him out at all costs. Maybe histrionics and lies can be put to use.

Nobody else could have done it. Neither Tendulkar, Sehwag, nor Dravid and Ganguly ever inspired such kind of fear. You can call it "dehshat" or "khauf". I wonder if Brian Lara would have been so indignant on the batsman being given out if it were someone else in place of Dhoni. Brian Lara behaved like a one of those bunch of kids playing cricket in galli. And no action has been taken by ICC. Now, if this isnt bias, what is? Players from Indian Subcontinent are much more strictly fined for offences much less than this. Remember ICC fining Ganguly for "appealing" .. haha.. Laughable. I think India should now play with disdain against these West Indies kids.

Perfect day to listen to all that heavy rock. The song of the day (currently playing) - Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast.

Well, I once saw a program on National Geographic in a Bible week. They did a story on the Book of Revelations. The author of this chapter is unknown. It predicts a doomsday - the future of the world. Anyway, it talks about 666 being the number of the beast (the devil).

Another interesting story in the same series - The Gospel of Judas. Yes there exists one, which was excluded from the Bible. The Pope did not include the other 20 odd gospels (some of which talked about Mary Magdelene) and the Gospel of Judas. He included the four gospels which were most popular and agreed the most with each other.

In the gospel, Jesus tells Judas that Judas is the only one who understands Him. Jesus tells Judas that he will betray him. Judas says that he was asked by Jesus to *release the man that clothes him*. Quite reminiscent of the Hindu concept of soul, isnt it?

UPDATE: Ok , I read this once again, and this does make some really wierd statements, like northern India captured by Pakistan, because of reservations in the army. Or that a doctor from quota extracts a leg instead of a tooth (ok, he might extract the tooth wrongly but not this). But then, its supposed to be humour, and not a serious argument against the hare-brained idea of reservations. No offence meant.

An excerpt from Emcee’s diary exactly 50 years from now

Ahmedabad, 30 April 2056: I attended the bash at the IIM-OBC Alumni Association to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the reservation of seats for OBCs (Other Backward Castes) in IIMs. Since I’m not an OBC, I was not supposed to attend, but at present, we MBFCs (Moderately Backward Forward Castes) together with the Non-Scheduled Tribes have a political alliance with the OBCs. We sipped champagne and talked about how so many of us had progressed from reserved seats in the IIMs to reserved jobs to reserved promotions. Unfortunately, the party broke up when a Non-scheduled Tribes faculty member objected to the OBCs dancing with all the pretty girls - he wanted equal opportunities for every caste at each dance. I pointed out that the Non-scheduled Tribes had exceeded the quota of champagne reserved for them. The party ended in a pitched caste battle.

1) May 2056: Today, I became president of the IIM Board of Directors. Under the present rotating presidency system, a member of each caste is made the president by turn. When it was the turn of the MBFCs for president, they had to choose me because I’m the only MBFC on the campus. True, I’m only the campus dhobi, but then every caste must be given an equal opportunity. All those centuries of oppression by the OSBFCs (Only Slightly Backward Forward Castes) and the OFCs (Other Forward Castes) must be rectified. I hope to restore the high standards at IIM - I overheard some foreigners calling it the Indian Institute of Morons, the other day.

2) May 2056: They’ve announced the cricket team for the series against Australia. I was overjoyed when they chose an MBFC man as captain. But my hopes were dashed when I realised he was a Most Backward Forward Caste and not a Moderately Backward Forward Caste. The selection committee lamented that it was gross discrimination that no member from the Jarowa tribe (the Stone Age tribe in the Andamans) had ever found a place in the Indian cricket team. A squad has since been dispatched to the Andamans to capture a Jarowa tribal to play in the national team. I hope he will improve their performance - they had an innings defeat against the Maldives recently. I would have played myself except for the fact that I lost a leg some years ago when I was in hospital with a toothache and a doctor recruited through the Unscheduled Caste quota extracted my leg instead of my tooth.

3) May 2056: There are too many NFCs (Neo-Forward castes) in the IT business. Under the terms of the Business Reservation Act, their firms will now be taken over by the other castes. I hope they will be able to restore the Indian IT industry back to its former glory. For some unfathomable reason, it has gone down the drain after job reservations were implemented. I went for a movie featuring star actor Mungeri Ram. He may lack teeth, be four-feet-three and have hair growing out of his nose, but this year it’s the turn of the EBC-RYs (Extremely Backward Caste-Rural Yokels) to be stars and Mungeri Ram is the best of the lot. I wonder why foreign movies have become so popular.

4) May 2056: A truly great day. We now have an OFBMBC (Other Forward But Moderately Backward Caste) general as the Head of the Armed Forces. I hope he’ll be able to win back the territory we lost ever since reservations were implemented in the Army. Since then, the north has been taken by Pakistan, the North-east by China, the east by Bangladesh and the south by Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Only last winter, we lost the war against Bhutan and free India is now limited to the western coastal states. But I’m sure the OFBMBC general will turn the tide.

5) May 2056: My wife and I have been blessed with a bonny daughter. Since my wife’s an SBBNSBC (Slightly Backward But Not So Backward Caste), my daughter will be an MBFC-SBBNSBC. I must lobby for reservation for her caste. She’s the only member and I’m sure she has a great future.

MAY BE THE FUTURE IS LIKE THIS:-

Sun is rising as usual in the east. I m standing here outside the school, waiting for my 10 yr kid. He studies is class 2.Only this year he could get admission into the school. For the
last 5 yrs admissions were closed for the general category students. School bell rings. I can see a lot of happy children coming out of the gate, i waited for half an hour and my kid came at last after other children. General students are not allowed to cross the gate unless other OBC/SC/ST students have crossed the gates. OBC/SC/ST fathers drive
away their children in classy cars. But i hv to walk back home with my kid a 5km stretch.

I lost my car some years back when Govt. came with a rule that general people have to deposit a tax equal to cost of their cars. Failing which i had to sell the car.As far as buses
are concerned,the seats in buses are reserved for OBC/SC/ST ..So no place there also.
After walking some 5km in scorching heat i finally reached home. It was wednesday ... shit , no electricity.

Every mon,wed,thu,sat is power cut in the houses of General category population .So that SC/ST/OBC can be uplifted by providing them with every opportunity and in that consideration electricity is an important factor. Its 10:00 pm in night no electricity at home. Its very hot inside the four walls of home .So i dare to step out in park with my wife and kid. I seated myself with my family on a secluded bench in garden. It was hardly 5 min. a guard came to us strolling in the park. He asked me what caste you belong to. I said with some hesitation .. G..General. He asked me to pay a fine of Rs.200 and get out of the park.

My Fault...The bench i was sitting on was meant for again the SC/ST/OBC .. for their upliftment peace of mind is on essential things. So govt came with this decision to Reserve benches for them.Kudos to them...

Its early in the morning ...the newspaper wala just knocked the door. I took the newspaper and started reading ..,its independence day .. i never used to forget this days some 20 yrs back. My kid hardly knows wat 15th august is, because i never told him any stories of greatness of our country or anything related to country. I don't feel like telling him the failures after freedom. On front page of newspaper, in a corner their is a news about a OBC member getting 6 months imprisonment in "BAL SUDHAR GRAHA" from a juvenile court for murdering and raping a six year old girl .Yes the rules have been
amended, since the last 5 years. The Culprit was a 25 year old OBC so age relaxation was provided for trial of crime. So he was taken to juvenile court, since there is an age relaxation for OBC/SC/ST. About 11 am some one gave me the BAD news about demise of one of my neighbour and friend Mr. Mehta. I went to his house for condolence next day, his body was lying there still rotting in the heat. I asked his son about the Cremation.

His son told me " Many reserved category have died yesterday so we are not getting entry to cremation ground ". This rule is the latest from Govt. Where the seats in cremation ground will be reserved for SC/ST/OBC for their upliftment. Finally next day Mehta ji was creamted. i could see sun setting through the Flames burning a liberated Body, liberated from caste n creed. I was surprised sun still sets in the west.? it was about 9 pm , i was about to sleep in my bed my son came to me with innocence in his eyes , inquisitively he asked me the question
